Hasta la Raíz: 3 Scientists on Advancing Biomedical Science in Latin America
In celebration of Latinx Heritage month, CZI highlighted three innovative scientists whose work exemplifies “Hasta la Raíz,” a testament “to the roots” of the Latina/o/x community, as they advance pivotal biomedical research. The highlight included Andrés Kamaid, a researcher at the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo in Uruguay and CZI Imaging grantee.
In one project, Andrés is collaborating with principal investigator and fellow CZI Imaging grantee Leonel Malacrida to bring state-of-the-art imaging technologies to Uruguay to advance researchers’ understanding of living cells. The creation of a new facility will provide imaging services throughout Latin America, as well as provide training in modern imaging and analysis methods for the next generation of scientists. In a related effort supported by CZI, Andrés is leading a project to build a collaborative network to advance bioimaging in Latin America. Called the Latin America Bioimaging Network, this program will provide a platform for imaging scientists across the region to interact, share experiences, and collaborate in expanding access to bioimaging training and technology. NIH New Innovator Award to Xiaoyu Shi
Congratulations to CZI Imaging grantee Xiaoyu Shi, who was recently awarded an NIH New Innovator award! The goal of Shi’s project is to develop GO3D, a 'multiomics' technology featuring gel-based optical isolation, which will enable the profiling of proteins, RNA, and DNA of whole tissues with subcellular resolution. Imaging Tech
napari is a fast, interactive, multi-dimensional image viewer for Python. It’s designed for browsing, annotating, and analyzing large multi-dimensional images. Information on getting started with napari, tutorials, documentation and more can be found on napari.org. To get in touch with the napari community or ask additional questions, visit the forum on image.sc.

CZI Open Science 2022 Annual Meeting
We had a fantastic time joining the CZI Open Science 2022 meeting in Santa Rosa, California, together with 169 attendees representing 21 countries across six continents. Developers working with projects related to napari and Python ecosystems (NumFOCUS, Quansight, Zarr, Ilastik, Dask, napari plugin developers, and more) shared ideas at various sessions. If you missed the meeting, recordings of plenary sessions will be available soon and you can follow the conversation on social media.
